Gabrielle Narcisse (2001) is a born and raised Jersey Girl now based in NYC. From the moment she could hold a marker, Narcisse began drawing; from the moment she could walk, she began dancing; when she was gifted her first digital camera in the first grade, she began taking photos. Gabrielle Narcisse is a multidisciplinary artist who practices with a variety of visual, written, and performance techniques. These areas include painting, dance, collage, video, photography, performance, and poetry, amongst others. In her current visual practice, she has delved into the realm of fiber arts and sculpture. Her current work utilizes antique mirrors as a base to construct sculptural forms informed by her lived traumatic experiences utilizing materials such as undergarments, hosiery, rope, twine, wire, etc. Her use of mirrors inherently forces the audience to participate in the work by confronting their reflection. They become a part of the piece. The audience may consider how they perceive themselves, what internal and external conflicts or struggles they face, and perhaps even connect the imagery to their own traumatic experiences. As a young adult who struggles with significant trauma and mental disorders, it is pertinent to make work that is authentic to her lived experiences. Creative work has also aided her healing process. Through art, Narcisse reclaims her narrative and turns her darkness into something that gives her strength.
In addition to being an artist Narcisse has worked as an event, photo, and video producer as well as an art curator primarily through the organization she founded in 2020, Black Girl Fight Club. You can read about her contributions to the founding and her efforts in directing the organization here.
